Comments:

I understand and have agreed to participate in the 2009 Carolinas Biketober Challenge as a volunteer and have read and understand my responsibilities to be performed. Based on the Society's "code of conduct", I also understand that as a representative of the National MS Society, I must always conduct myself in a fashion that does not jeopardize the image of the Society.

I hereby consent to and permit emergency treatment in the event of injury or illness while participating in the event. I also hereby give permission to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Mid-Atlantic chapter to use my name and any photograph, likeness or image taken of me during the event in any promotional materials, publication or via the website.

It is my further understanding that NMSS reserves the right to refuse or dismiss anyone that may cause any disturbance or hindrance in any manner that could jeopardize the safety of oneself or others.

It will be my sole responsibility to obtain the necessary mode of transportation to perform these responsibilities. If for whatever reason I am unable to perform as agreed, I will advise the Mid-Atlantic chapter event coordinator immediately.

Job Descriptions
Director's Shadow
A Director's Shadow is partnered with a National MS Society staff member to provide communications concerning important issues and problems that arise during the event. Experience working a NMSS event is preferred.
Start / Finish
This HAM is stationed at the start/finish location for each day. In the event of a medical emergency, this HAM notifies the event staff so that they can prepare for the arrival of the cyclist's family (retrieve the cyclist's belongings, etc.).
SAG (Support and Gear)
  • Transport cyclists needing minor medical attention forward to the next rest stop.
  • Pick up anyone who's simply too tired to continue.
  • Offer water, supportive words and a smile when you pick up a participant.
  • Pick up volunteers if more support is needed at a rest stop.
  • Transport food, water or supplies if a rest stop has a shortage.
  • Be able to effectively communicate your location at all times.
  • When patrolling the route, drive with your hazard lights flashing. Drive cautiously. Keep alert, and look for signs that might indicate trouble (ie: not riding in a straight line).
  • Whenever you pass a police officer supporting the event with traffic control at an intersection, please offer them water or wave a "Thank You."
  • Motorcycle Monitors
Motorcycle monitors cruise the route with the participants, often in sections where the roads are clogged with cyclists and vehicles can't pass safely. You are asked to encourage the cyclists to ride single file and watch for tiring participants. All motorcycle mobile HAMs are required to wear a helmet whenever on their bike.
    Rest Stops
Rest Stop HAM Operators provide communications concerning supplies and medical problems at the rest stops. When you first arrive at your rest stop, introduce yourself to the Rest Stop Captain and the medical person. Explain that you are there to provide communications with the event organizers. Very early during the net, Net Control will ask you the status of your rest stop. You then reply that you are fully staffed, have all your supplies, and are set up and ready to go (assuming its true).
    Putty
If you are willing to jump in and fill in where ever and whenever needed -- this is the job position for you!
